Who we are

Born from over 25 years leading and mentoring other leaders in hospital-based quality and patient safety activities, Heartland Intellicare was formed to address the challenges facing over 2,000 rural critical access hospitals (CAH) across the United States.

CAHs navigate a multifaceted set of challenges, largely stemming from their rural location, limited resources, and unique operational structure. They are crucial for providing care in underserved rural areas, but they face financial, operational, and workforce challenges. Geographic isolation contributes to challenges in the ability to recruit and retain experienced staff members to manage a hospital’s Quality Assurance Performance Improvement (QAPI) program mandated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). In urban and suburban hospitals, this role is managed by a team of experienced individuals who have access to ongoing specialized training and resources. In CAHs, this role is frequently filled by a single individual who also has responsibility for numerous other key operational duties.

In this challenging environment, the role of the CAH quality director or manager becomes critical. They are responsible for ensuring patient safety, regulatory compliance, and continuous process improvement through strategic initiatives that empower staff and mitigate risks. However, the scope of their responsibilities often exceeds the capacity of the existing workforce. This is where our team at Heartland Intellicare can make a significant impact by offering an innovative, AI-enabled fractional workforce solution. By leveraging advanced technology to supplement the limited human resources in CAHs, we can help bridge the gaps in quality management, improve patient outcomes, and ensure that rural communities receive the efficient, high-quality care they deserve.
